The retirement of MV Hebridean Isles marked the end of an era for Scotland’s west coast communities. After 40 years of service carrying passengers, vehicles and freight throughout the Hebrides, the much-loved CalMac vessel departed Glasgow on its final voyage to a recycling facility in Denmark.

Behind the scenes, however, the operation to move the ferry was far more complex than a standard tow. Before the vessel could begin its final journey, careful planning was required to ensure it could be safely moved from the King George V Dock, down the River Clyde, and onward to its destination. This required the coordination of specialist marine contractors, tug operators, vessel owners and suppliers.

Lifting Material Supplies (LMS) was proud to play a part in this project, working alongside our parent company, Atlas Winch & Hoist Services, to help provide the specialist equipment required for the operation. Atlas approached LMS with an urgent requirement for a range of lifting and rigging products needed to assist with the marine towage arrangements, with challenging lead times and a requirement for fully certified equipment.

Drawing on our extensive supply network and established relationships with leading manufacturers, LMS coordinated the sourcing and delivery of multiple specialist components from several suppliers across the UK. Working to a tight schedule, our team ensured equipment was ordered, certified and dispatched quickly to meet the programme requirements of the project. The equipment package included wire rope slings, chain assemblies, connectors and galvanised long-link chain, all delivered within the required timeframe to support the operation. 

One of the key challenges was coordinating deliveries from multiple manufacturing locations while ensuring complete certification and traceability across all supplied products. By working closely with both Atlas and our supply chain partners, LMS managed the procurement process from enquiry through to delivery, helping to keep the project moving forward. Documentation, certification and proof of delivery were provided throughout the process to ensure compliance with the project’s requirements. 

The project highlights the value of the close working relationship between LMS and Atlas Winch & Hoist Services. By combining Atlas’s specialist expertise in winching, hoisting and marine operations with LMS’s ability to source and supply high-quality lifting equipment at short notice, we were able to provide a joined-up solution for a time-critical marine project.
